The MULADHARA or “root” chakra, is located at the base of the spine. It forms our foundation, and is linked to self-preservation, survival instincts and our ability to ground ourselves in the physical world. It is, according to Tantric doctrine, the seat of Kundalini, the latent cosmic energy that resides in every living being. When this latent power is activated through Hatha Yoga practicises (asana, pranayama), it rises through each of the chakras and up through the top of the head to the Sahasrara chakra. Color: red Symbol: Yantra square, surrounded by four petals representing the four directions of Earth. Attributes include both patience and greed. The SVADHISTHANA chakra, oriented just underneath the navel, is related to our sexual and reproductive capacity. Svadhisthana Chakra encompasses the astral plane as well as the planes of entertainment, fantasy, nullity, jealousy, mercy, envy, and joy. Ideally this chakra brings us fluidity and grace, depth of feeling, sexual fulfillment, and the ability to accept change. Colors: orange and brown Symbol: six white petals with a crescent in the center Attributes include emotions and sexuality, purity and attachments. The MANIPURA, or solar plexus chakra, is the seat of our emotions. It is from this chakra that we have a sense of our personal power in the world. When healthy, this chakra brings us energy, effectiveness, spontaneity, and non-dominating power. Color: yellow Symbol: ten petals with a downward pointing triangle, representing the tattwa of fire Attributes include dynamism, energy, and will-power. The ANAHATA or heart chakra governs love and compassion, and mediates between higher and lower planes of being, healing, lungs (breath, prana), and the area of relationships in your life. A healthy fourth chakra allows us to love deeply, feel compassion, and have a deep sense of peace and centeredness. Blockage can manifest as immune system or heart problems, or a lack of compassion. Colors: green and pink Symbol: Five-pointed star surrounded by twelve petals Attributes include love, balance and restlessness. The VISHUDDHA chakra, located in the throat, directly tied to creativity and communication. Blockage manifests as problems like laryngitis or sore throats, creative blocks or general problems communicating with others. When Vishuddha is open, negative experience is transformed into wisdom and learning. Colors: sky blue Symbol: White Circle (Lunar Circle - Pure Cosmic Sound) surrounded by 16 Purple-Gray Petals. Associated with communication and creativity, governs speech and self-expression. The AJNA chakra, or third eye, is considered the chakra of the mind. It is related to the act of seeing, both on a physical level and a person’s level of consciousness. When healthy it allows us to see clearly, in effect, letting us "see the big picture." Color: Indigo Symbol: White circle with two luminous Petals in which all the elements are combined. Associated with intuition and imagination, transcending senses, experiencing God-In-Self or Atman. Allows mercy, honesty and forgiveness. The SAHASRARA chakra is also known as the “crown chakra" and is located at the top of the head. Sahasrara is related to one's personal spiritual connection to the universe, and relates to pure consciousness. It is from this chakra that all others emanate. Sahasrara symbolizes detachment from illusion; an essential element in obtaining higher consciousness of the truth that one is all and all is one. It is our connection to the greater world beyond, to a place of all-knowing. When developed, this chakra brings us knowledge, wisdom, understanding, spiritual connection, and bliss. Colors: Violet and white Symbol: One thousand rainbow colored petals Associated with thought, universal identity, and self-knowledge. |
